Tempurpedic vs. Saatva vs. Sleep Number: Premium Mattress Reviews

These are three very different products; any one of them might be right for you depending on your needs. Tempur-Pedic features its own memory foam which is more comfortable, longer-lasting and sleeps cooler than others on the market. This kind of mattress reduces motion significantly and lets you sleep next to an insomniac or restless sleeper without being bothered. Saatva is the first 100% online mattress manufacturer and store. As such it offers comparable quality products for much lower prices than competitors. It is a more traditionally constructed coil product but innovates with its use of organic materials and American workers. Sleep Number is an air bed that gives you an adjustable option for when your softness and firmness preferences change. It also benefits couples who sleep in the same bed since they can each adjust their side independently.

Tempur-Pedic Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Tempur-Pedic sets the standard for memory foam mattresses and tends to lead any other foam competitor in almost all categories.

  • Memory foam localizes, absorbs and reduces motion, and Tempur-Pedic's higher-density foam beds are the best on the market. This means the beds let one person toss and turn or get up frequently without disturbing the other person.

  • Speaking of tossing and turning, you're less likely to be doing it on this bed because it minimizes pressure points so you don't need to move around to stay comfortable.

  • Tempur-Pedic beds are sensitive to temperature so they “mold” to your body; this gets you more comfort and support.

  • Tempur-Pedic beds help you get more restful and efficient sleep because by sleeping more soundly you can spend less time doing it.

  • Tempur-Pedic beds are virtually silent because they are made mostly of foam instead of an innerspring system like Saatva's that can squeak or air pumps like Sleep Number that make noise when in use.

  • Tempur-Pedic beds are much less likely than innerspring beds like Saatva to have premature sagging problems.

  • Tempur-Pedic enjoys a good record for durability, lifespan and warranty, compared to both mattresses generally and other similar memory foam mattresses. In fact it is one of the most long-lasting mattresses on the market – lasting slightly longer than Sleep Number and significantly longer than others.

  • Consumer studies have shown that Tempur-Pedic beds can ease or even take away pain. Most common areas that benefit are the back, hip and shoulder. Sleep Number may match Tempur-Pedic's pain relieving qualities but no other bed meets or exceeds Tempur-Pedic on this point.

  • Tempur-Pedic has an “A+” Better Business Bureau Rating. This rating has been stable over time.

  • Tempur-Pedic has a good warranty that meets or surpasses those of other foam beds. Tempur-Pedic has great sagging coverage and sagging is the most common mattress complaint overall.

Cons

  • Tempur-Pedic mattresses are significantly more expensive than similar mattresses. (It is worth noting that most Tempur-Pedic owners state that the mattress was a good purchase and worth the money.) Most luxury models are comparable in price to Sleep Number beds but the most expensive Tempur-Pedic options are far costlier than the most expensive Sleep Number options.

  • Memory foam, especially the higher-density kind that most Tempur-Pedic beds have, is sensitive to temperature and pressure. This means that it can be resistant when when you try to move or get up.

  • Tempur-Pedic beds are more likely than similar beds and both Saatva and Sleep Number to “off gas.” Off gassing is caused by the manufacturing and packaging process and is signaled by a sort of chemical odor when the mattress is new.

  • Tempur-Pedic beds absorb and retain body heat which can give you a “too warm” sleeping surface. They are now making newer models (Cloud Supreme and Rhapsody) intended to sleep cooler but it's not yet clear if they do.

  • Tempur-Pedic beds tend to be firmer in cooler environments, say less than 70 degrees. This means they can be too firm for the first few minutes of use at night.

  • Tempur-Pedic mattresses are very heavy. This makes them more difficult to move than both Saatva and Sleep Number and can even impact changing bed linens.

  • Tempur-Pedic's otherwise good warranty does not explicitly cover softening even though for these beds it is just as common as sagging.

Tempur-Pedic Basics

Customer Service

Consumers overall find Tempur-Pedic's customer service helpful and informative. The company helps with questions after purchasing and delivery issues. Tempur-Pedic also has a good reputation for resolving claims.

Warranty

The Tempur-Pedic warranty is as good as or better than those of other foam brands:

  • non-prorated coverage for the first 10 years

  • prorated coverage for the next 15 years

  • total of 25 years of coverage

  • great sagging coverage to resolve most common global mattress complaint (average coverage requirement is more than 1.25 inches of mattress sagging before warranty applies, but Tempur-Pedic requires only .76 inch or more).

Return Policy

When you buy direct from Tempur-Pedic the return policy includes a 90-day trial period during which you can return your bed for an exchange or refund. However, you must pay return shipping on this very heavy item which will be at least a few hundred dollars and a real hassle. The return policy only applies to direct purchases from Tempur-Pedic.

Bottom Line

This is an awesome, comfortable bed. It's also a really expensive bed. If you have sleeping issues or you're just looking for the most comfort and least hassle, Tempur-Pedic may be worth your money. Most people who buy it think it is.

Saatva Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Saatva's innerspring and memory foam topper combination provide good initial comfort and pain relief. They boast better motion isolation than other innerspring beds though not as much as Tempur-Pedic or Sleep Number.

  • Saatva beds are made in many firmness levels, ultra firm to ultra soft.

  • Saatva's innerspring construction means their beds soften less than Tempur-Pedic beds over time although they are not as good for maintaining their firmness as are Sleep Number products.

  • Motion isolation in Saatva beds is better than other innerspring choices but not as good as Sleep Number and definitely not as good as Tempur-Pedic.

  • Squeaking and other noise from coils in Saatva beds is better than other innerspring choices and although Sleep Number beds do not squeak they are even louder overall. Saatva beds are definitely not as quiet as Tempur-Pedic beds.

  • Saatva boasts a “green” business model. In practice this means that their materials are more green: the outer cover of the bed is made from organic cotton, the inner springs are made from recycled steel, and the memory foam layer is a bio-based foam. Also, their online business model greatly reduces carbon foot print and makes them virtually paperless.

  • Saatva provides an American-made product at a low price. They have seven American factories and 14 American satellite warehouses delivering.

  • Saatva customer service is excellent. Saatva will not charge a cancellation fee. If they run late on a delivery time window you can cancel your order with a full refund including the delivery fee. If you receive damaged merchandise you have a few choices. You can send it back for a full refund including the delivery fee. If you do that they will bring another bed free on the next available delivery day. You can accept the bed and record the damage on the delivery ticket and they will exchange it out for you fast and free.

  • Saatva has the best home trial lasting for 45 days. It is better than Tempur-Pedic, Sleep Number or anything else. If you don't like it, send it back and pay only delivery, hidden charges like restocking. Saatva also offers a 'Fairness Replacement Option' to reduce ambiguity in determining what constitutes a defect. Within the first year, Saatva will replace your mattress free if it's defective. They will also replace it at a discount for 15 years without charging a pick up fee, only delivery.

  • Saatva beds are “anti-allergen,” so their foam is never processed with formaldehyde or other irritants. The cover fabric is organic and flame retardant thanks to a natural non-irritating thistle barrier.

  • Saatva pocket coils are individually wrapped and designed to minimize friction and maximize strength. These are the coils most likely to provide support and motionlessness.

 Cons

  • Due to their coil construction, Saatva beds are less durable and long-lasting than either Tempur-Pedic or Sleep Number.

  • Owner satisfaction for Saatva owners is higher than it is for other innerspring mattress owners, but this is mostly based on customer service and price. Owner satisfaction is higher for both Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number, except, of course, with regard to price.

  • Inner coil beds with pillow tops like Saatva's are especially likely to be less long-lasting.

  • Inner coil beds with pillow tops like Saatva's have the most problems with the most common consumer complaint about mattresses: sagging. Thick pillow top beds like Saatva's are even more likely to sag. Saatva combats this problem by using better materials insulate and higher quality steel for the coils. the overall quality of construction impacts potential for sagging and Saatva does show good workmanship. They also offer a good return policy so if they mattresses sag, especially prematurely, there is a partial remedy.

Saatva Basics

45 Day Home Trial

If you don't like your Saatva bed you can return it within the 45 days for a full refund of the purchase price, although you do have the cover the delivery fee. There are no penalty fees, restocking fees or pick up fees.

Warranty

Saatva has a warranty period of 15 years – longer than most other innerspring mattress manufacturers. Saatva also offers a 'Fairness Replacement Option' to reduce ambiguity in determining what constitutes a defect.

Up to 12 months after you buy your Saatva they will replace a defective mattress free. Within 2 to 5 years Saatva will replace defective mattresses for only 25% of the original price you paid. Within years 6 to 10, that rises to 50% of the original price and for years 11 to 15, 75% of the original price. There is a delivery fee but no pick up fee. Most other mattresses of both coil and memory foam varieties provide non-prorated warranty coverage for 10 years.

Bottom Line

Saatva offers a top of the line version of the innerspring bed, which is less comfortable and durable generally. Their version is a good as you'll get for a coil bed, though, and their low cost, reasonable warranty, great service and business practices may make this the right choice for you. If you like the more traditional feel of a springy coil bed, you won't do much better than this one.

Sleep Number Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Sleep Number beds are permanent-use air beds. This is not like sleeping on an air mattress! They are comfortable, and they are the only kind of mattress that lets you adjust firmness, and instantly. This, and the customizability it allows, is the top reason most people buy Sleep Number beds. It's useful for those who just like the feel of different levels of firmness, and for people with injuries, illness or pain.

  • Each side of a Sleep Number bed has its own air chamber that operates independently, so each side can have a different firmness. This is another main feature that Sleep Number owners love.

  • Sleep Number design promotes less tossing, turning and restlessness in the same ways as Tempur-Pedics do, by eliminating pressure points.

  • Sleep Number beds also compete with Tempur-Pedics in terms of reducing or ending pain in the hip, back and shoulder, especially. In fact, as noted above, while Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number are close rivals with regard to pain relief, no other beds come close according to consumer research.

  • Sleep Number beds localize and reduce motion more effectively than even the best coil beds like Saatva's. It is less effective at this than Tempur-Pedic, however. Because it is an air bed, there will be displacement when one sleeper gets up; Sleep Number acknowledges this in writing.

  • Sleep Number beds get higher marks than any other beds from pregnant women; the adjustability helps them reduce discomfort.

  • Sleep Number beds are longer-lasting than most mattresses; this is partly so because most problems that they have over time can be repaired by replacing bad parts. You can even replace non-mechanical parts which is a bonus. Also, air does not compress and break down over time. Compared to Tempur-Pedic beds Sleep Number's longevity is about the same; compared to everyone else it's far better.

  • Because Sleep Number beds are in large part air they are lightweight and easy to move, change and handle.

  • Like Tempur-Pedic, select Comfort Corporation who makes Sleep Number beds boasts an “A+” Better Business Bureau rating which is stable.

Cons

  • Some owners dispute that Sleep Number actually lets you adjust firmness and say that instead it adjusts support. This means that adjustment changes spinal alignment and flatness of the surface, not firmness.

  • One of the biggest complaints about Sleep Number beds is the middle section where the individual air chambers meet. For some of them it takes the form of a valley” and for others a “hump.” This means you can have issues with either or both sides drooping towards the middle, or rolling over the “hump” which isn't comfortable to sleep on. Sleep Number can sometimes help with this; they have a “lift” which can help you with the valley (nothing for the hump, though). These problems are most apparent when the settings on each side are very different.

  • Sleep Number beds can make a lot of noise because the firmness level requires an electric air pump for adjustment. Sleep Number says the pumps are “whisper quiet,” but many consumers disagree.

  • Like Tempur-Pedic beds, Sleep Number beds are expensive, although at the very highest level Tempur-Pedic is more so. Because they are made with simple, inexpensive materials though, unlike Tempur-Pedic, their value can seem less convincing, especially to those who do not understand paying a lot for ideas.

  • Sleep Number beds can leak and lose air, both slowly over time and rapidly. Defective air pumps, bad connections or controllers and damaged or leaky air bladders are common causes of leaking. If a Sleep Number bed does lose air comfort can suffer.

  • Sleep Number firmness settings fluctuate without your input at times, a lot, and in either direction; this happens when sleeping position or weight impacts the bed or when temperature or barometric pressure effect the air pressure in the bed.

  • Because Sleep Number beds are low weight they can move around too easily and be tougher to keep firmly in place.

  • Sleep Number beds are less durable than most other beds, including Tempur-Pedic and Saatva; they are more likely to break because they are partially mechanical.

  • Sleep Number beds require assembly, and bad assembly can cause malfunctioning and discomfort. Sleep Number techs will assemble the bed upon delivery for a fee.

Sleep Number Basics

Warranty

Sleep Number beds have a 20-year limited warranty. Like Saatva's warranty, coverage starts being prorated after year two. The warranty does not cover the relatively common problem of flattening of the comfort layer. Other air beds tend to offer a longer non-prorated period. Most other mattresses of both coil and memory foam varieties provide non-prorated warranty coverage for 10 years.

Return Policy and Trial Period

Sleep Number gives you 45 days to try out your bed. If in that time you decide you don't like it you can send it back, either for a new one or a 100% refund minus shipping and setup fees if you incur them.

Bottom Line

Sleep Number beds are the only choice if you need adjustability with your bed's firmness. They are also a great choice for people who can't agree on a mattress. It is true that there are significant customer complaints with Sleep Number beds, but they remain a unique offering in the luxury mattress market.

Wrap Up Shoot Out

Comfort

  • Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number are the most comfortable options. Both are rated to alleviate pain and they are the only options on the market with that distinction.

  • Saatva is not going to reach that level of comfort although compared to a malfunctioning Sleep Number it will probably win.

Cost

  • Saatva is the lowest cost option by a lot. It provides substantial value for the price.

  • Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number are some of the most expensive options on the market. Interestingly although they are rated very similarly in many areas, more Tempur-Pedic owners than Sleep Number owners report that although their bed was expensive, it was worth it.

Cost Details

Quality of Sleep

  • Tempur-Pedic promotes sound and silent sleep. It is quieter and more motionless than Saatva or Sleep Number.

  • Saatva is quieter than Sleep Number but not as motionless.

  • Sleep Number owners report high quality of sleep but also problems with too much noise.

Owner Satisfaction

  • Tempur-Pedic owners report the highest satisfaction but not much higher than Sleep Number.

  • Saatva owners report the most favorable customer service and support experiences by far. Tempur-Pedic owners report good customer service but not as great as Saatva. Sleep Number owners report many problems with customer service and support.

Longevity

  • Both Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number beds provide significantly more longevity than other beds.

  • Saatva beds are constructed well but any coil bed is less likely to last as long as either a Tempur-Pedic (foam) or Sleep Number (air) option.

  • As a newer company, however, Saatva has not had time to establish the same length of track record as the other two companies.
